goodbye 2013...

wow, we're about to embark on our third year as bloggers!

but, before we leave 2013 behind,
i wanted to take a quick look back at the highlights...

first up, the transformation of our master bedroom from blah beige to super-saturated green. i love the cozy feeling a new paint job instantly created!

reworking the front room

hello, hello!
how was everyone's christmas??

i'm checking in quickly today because i have exciting news: fish surprised me by ordering the piece of furniture i've been lusting after, the west elm ainslie sofa!
i love it.

our yellow and white christmas tree

i just realized i never shared pictures of our yellow and white tree this year...sooo here's where we ended up!
it's not a perfectly perfect blogger's tree, but it makes our family happy to look at it and that's what counts. :)

FIFTY fabulous 2014 calendars

one of my favorite things to shop for as the new year approaches -- besides bed linens and clearanced christmas decor -- are calendars and planners. i scoured my favorite shops, etsy, and beyond to find these fifty fabulous calendars to start your 2014 off right.

november in review

...and here we are, at the last month of 2013.

i say it every time, but...can you believe it's december?? where did the year go?? we kept pretty busy in november -- it was a month of plans, plans, and more plans.

Nov 30, 2013

a(nother) yellow and white christmas

christmas last year took an unexpected turn towards yellow and white -- inspiration struck while i was standing in the christmas lights aisle at the hardwood store. in hindsight, our holiday color palette was only natural, given the tree's proximity to our yellow and white polka-squared dining room.
click here to read more about our fancy chandelier!

last year, i was aiming for mostly homemade decorations. it was our first christmas in this house and i didn't want to go buckwild buying seventy-two-million ornaments. i wanted our collection to grow naturally, year by year.

shopping for a second baby

and now...an inevitable baby post.

crab+fish isn't a baby blog, but...this is a blog about our family. and when our family expands, a baby-related post or two might pop up.

i'm 35 weeks along and i've finally started thinking about...
the second baby is different in a lot of respects. i sort of know, for the most part, what to expect while i'm expecting. we have most of the stuff already. we especially lucked out because not only are we having another boy, but he's due at the same time of the year as K's birthday so all the clothes from our first pregnancy will still be season appropriate.

Nov 23, 2013

some quick and easy christmas crafts

the holiday season is mere days away!
ready to start crafting??

i was pretty ambitious last christmas (by my low standards anyway) and wanted to share some of my favorite crafts. they're all pretty easy and not one should take longer than an hour.

Nov 20, 2013

update on the dining table III

fish is making significant progress on the diy dining table -- i think it may get finished before the new baby gets here...wahoo! time to start planning his next project, haha!

the last time we spoke, fish was sanding the completed tabletop...and i nearly broke his back. bad wife!

he didn't get any more done for a couple weeks due to his intense work schedule. but! when he continued, he was able to bang out the table base in just a couple days.

powder room mini-makeover

the powder room mini-makeover is a project we wanted to address by the end of the year. HA. with a baby on the way, it's looking like we won't tackle this project until next spring at the earliest.

before any re-tiling or beadboard-ing takes place, there are a few tiny updates we made to satisfy us during the waiting period...

sick figgy -- SOS!

remember the glory days of our fiddle leaf fig?

after a couple of weeks, he started dropping a leaf or two every couple of days -- we thought maybe he needed more light. so we tried moving him closer to the window...

placemat shopping

let's talk about family dinners.

we don't make mealtime as much of a big deal as it should be, as i always thought it would be. with fish's crazy hours, we're only home as a family during dinnertime maybe half of the week. maybe.

also, i'll take some blame: i'm a terrible cook. sometimes my meals turn out edible. sometimes not. i just don't get excited about cooking like i do about crafting.

however! with the brand new dining table fish is building us, i am absolutely going to make family meal time a priority and in order to do that......we need placemats. not what you were expecting, right? but, i want to protect what fish has been working so hard on. ...also, i probably need to take some cooking lessons.

in case you've forgotten, this is our dining room, with screamingly bright yellow polka-dot walls:

october in review

you may have noticed posting on crab+fish slowed waaay down last month. that second trimester energy is now a distant memory. i'm 31 weeks along -- almost there! despite my desire to laze around on the couch all day, we did get a few things accomplished in october besides all the crazy halloween fun...

halloween 2013
...and the giveaway winner!

i didn't get near as involved in halloween this year as i did in 2012, but that's what happens when a little bun in the oven zaps all your energy. next year, i hope to be back with a vengeance! :)

here's a quick round-up of my 2013 spooky DIYs...and look to the end of the post for the winner of the rustoleum neverwet giveaway!

my favorite project by far this year were these adorable ghost lights. K was crazy about them too so we ended up hanging them in his room as a pseudo-nightlight.
i'm not actually sure he'll be able to deal if we take them down. they might become christmas ghosts of the past, present, and future...

update on the dining table II

sorry for the crappy phone pics in this post -- there was sawdust a'swirlin' and i didn't want to risk getting particles all up in my good camera.

last week, the wood for the dining table fish is making us -- pine for the base and white oak for the tabletop -- was laying on the floor of our garage.
after admiring ignoring it for a week, fish's schedule cleared up and Construction Day Numero Uno was upon us!

update on the dining table

we've made a wee bit of progress with the dining table...

of all the plans we were scouting out, we ultimately decided on ana white's farmhouse table. we liked the shape the best and it doesn't seem that difficult (for fish) to build.

we were having a hard time deciding between regular ol' dimensional lumber or springing for the nice stuff. we ended up doing a combination: pine for the legs and super-beautiful white oak for the tabletop.

halloween roundup!

before i take some deep breaths and delve into the super-crafty months ahead, i wanted to pause and share a round-up of last year's halloween projects with you.

my personal favorite was the monster truck costume i made for K from a cardboard box:

he loved it so much, he wants to be a monster truck again this year! who am i to say no? a bloated, tired, pregnant woman. skipping out on costume-making this year sounds like a blast!

pumpkin time!

oh, how things have changed in just twelve short months! this was me and my little buddy last year, shopping for pumpkins at a local farm...
K was a bit wary of the pumpkin patch...

this year, we're expecting another little bambino...
...and i FEEL like a pumpkin. blerg.

a bit of rearranging

we did some front room furniture-shuffling over the weekend. and by we, i mean i directed and fish did all the heavy lifting. the new look was precipitated partly by nesting, but mostly because big figgy needs more sunlight. at least we think that's why he's been looking so glum.

when we initially brought the fig tree home, we placed him in the southeast corner of the room as so:

going back in time...again...

since i started blogging nearly two years ago (whoa), i've evolved and now...finally...feel like i have settled into my style. when i initially created crab+fish, i chose colors, fonts, and graphics without paying attention to what i love most about my favorite blogs: simplicity.

and so, it's been a looong process updating old posts one by one: re-editing pictures, reformatting text, and clarifying instructions. you can see the initial batch here. this is the second installment.

first up is one of my earliest diy projects -- before we even moved into our first house! these fabric scrap flowers are super simple to make and are definitely pretty to look at.
i want to make more of these flowers, but use twigs for the stems...

mums, mats, and a mismatched fall wreath

for some reason, i was soo not into mums last year.
this year, i LOVE them.

even though the temperatures had yet to drop -- we were shopping in 90ºF weather! -- i couldn't resist picking up a few at the hardware store last weekend.

chili cookoff invites

when we bought our first house, we unknowingly moved in to the kind of neighborhood that has block parties and cookoffs -- did we luck out or what??

we were new to the neighborhood last year and i'm pretty sure our assignment was to bring plastic cups to the block party. necessary, but bo-ring!

this year, due to the save the date cards i made for a neighbor, i drew a much better assignment: make the invitations for a chili cookoff!

with pleasure!

a new dining table
(planning stages)

so. we need a dining table. this is our current situation: an eight-year-old dinette set from our apartment-living days.

and of course i want fish to build the new dining table for us. he's quickly becoming known as the neighborhood handyman so he's got to keep his image up. ;)

yarn-wrapped star

i've been spending my recent days cleaning out my craftspace -- and, in the process, discovering long-forgotten supplies...and projects i meant to do, but never quite got around to.

for example...

similar to the glistening HOs and the cheery red tree from last christmas, there's not much to this project.

gettin' figgy with it

hi everyone! we're back from vacation and slowly -- slowly -- unpacking. in the meantime...

notice anything different?
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

ever since fiddle leaf figs started popping up in homes across the world, i was IN. LOVE. i love the big, broad leaves. i love their skinny little chicken-legs trunks. i love how flouncy they appear.

sadly, they are still quite uncommon around here. i scoured the big box stores for ages...since last year!...and never found even a small figgy. i finally lucked out at a local nursery last spring with our Baby Figgy.
